What is pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain is discomfort in your lower abdomen. It might present as:

  • Mild or severe discomfort

  • Pain that comes and goes

  • Short-lived or long-lasting pain

  • Sharp or stabbing pain in one area

  • Dull pain

Pelvic discomfort could be a sign of a serious gynecological problem, which is why seeing your Reno Tahoe Women’s Health provider right away for an evaluation is important.

What causes pelvic pain?

Numerous factors can lead to pelvic pain, some of which are related to women’s health conditions. Examples include:

  • Menstrual cramps

  • Ectopic pregnancy

  • Endometriosis

  • Miscarriage

  • Ovarian cysts

  • Uterine fibroids

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

  • Ovarian cancer

Other causes of pelvic pain include appendicitis, colon cancer, constipation, other digestive issues, kidney stones, urinary tract infections (UTIs), hernias, and intestinal obstruction.

How is pelvic pain diagnosed?

To diagnose the cause of pelvic pain, your Reno Tahoe Women’s Health provider reviews your symptoms and asks questions about your medical history. They complete a pelvic exam and may use blood tests or imaging procedures, such as MRIs, CT scans, or ultrasound, to make a diagnosis.

During laparoscopy, your provider uses a thin lighted tube with a tiny camera attached to it to get a better view of the inside of pelvic organs and detect abnormal tissue or other signs of gynecological conditions. During this diagnostic procedure, they can remove abnormal tissue or growths.

What is the treatment for pelvic pain?

Your personalized pelvic pain treatment plan is based on what’s causing the pain. Your Reno Tahoe Women’s Health provider might recommend:

  • Further diagnostic testing

  • Taking certain medications

  • Routine medical monitoring

  • Lifestyle changes

  • Hormone treatments

  • Physical therapy

  • Minimally invasive gynecological procedures

Minor surgical procedures your provider might recommend to relieve pelvic pain include dilation and curettage (D&C), laparoscopy, hysterectomy, endometrial ablation, colpopexy to repair the vagina prolapse, or colporrhaphy to repair issues with the vaginal wall. You can go home the same day as the procedure.

The Reno Tahoe Women’s Health team uses the most advanced OB/GYN technology and procedures available to treat the cause of pelvic pain and restore your quality of life. Schedule an appointment over the phone or online at the first sign of long-lasting or severe discomfort.
